Sousão
Its origin is undeniably from the Minho region where it’s called Vinhão. But it is also known as Tinto, Tinto Nacional, Negrão, Pé de Perdiz, Espadeiro Preto, Espadeiro de Basto, Tinta Antiga and Tinta de Parada. It’s not hard to find a common trace to the various names which reference the dark and intense colour: the most distinctive characteristic of the Sousão caste. It’s the colour that truly singularizes and differentiates this national caste. Due to its nature it originates black, dark, opaque and closed wines almost impenetrable to light. It was these peculiar characteristics that made this caste very appreciated in the Douro, the second region to adopt this very original caste. It lost admirers throughout history but nowadays there is a revival of the caste with new plantations and new wines.
