Tinto Cão

The Tinto Cão caste has been planted in the Douro region since the eighteenth century but was never very appreciated by farmers because its production was low. During the eighties it was discovered that the Tinto Cão caste had great characteristics for the production of Porto wine. The plantation of this caste was extended to other regions such as Dão, Estremadura and the Setubal Peninsula where small quantities exist. The Tinto Cão caste has very small bunches and is late maturing. It’s very resistant to diseases and rotting and also endures very high temperatures. The Tinto Cão caste is frequently mixed with the Touriga Nacional and Aragonez castes as well as others. It produces wines filled with colour and delicate and floral aromas.
